What is a safe zone?

What is a safe zone in video ads? A safe zone is the area of a vertical video ad that the app's interface does not cover: the space left after the top bar, the caption at the bottom and the side buttons. Text, logos, product shots and calls to action belong inside it so viewers can see them.

What are the safe zone margins for each platform?

Meta and Google publish margins as a share of the frame. TikTok publishes its safe zone only as downloadable template files.

Placement Keep clear: top Bottom Sides Source
Instagram Reels 14 percent 35 percent 6 percent each side Meta Ads Guide
Instagram Stories 14 percent 35 percent 6 percent each side Meta Ads Guide
Facebook Stories 14 percent 20 percent Not stated Meta Ads Guide
YouTube Shorts 10 percent 25 percent 10 percent on the right Google
TikTok In-Feed Template files only TikTok

Meta's safe zone help article adds one rule: if a Reels ad includes disclaimers, leave the bottom 40 percent clear. Ads Manager also has a safe zone guardrail toggle that shows the zones.

Worked example

On a 1080 × 1920 Instagram Reels frame, the margins convert to pixels like this (the same values the safe zone checker uses):

Area Calculation Pixels
Top 14 percent of 1,920 269
Bottom 35 percent of 1,920 672
Each side 6 percent of 1,080 65
Safe area 1,080 − 130 wide, 1,920 − 941 tall 950 × 979

The safe area starts 65 pixels from the left and 269 pixels from the top. For YouTube Shorts the same frame leaves 972 × 1,248 pixels, starting at the left edge and 192 pixels from the top.

For TikTok, the checker uses an approximation marked as unofficial, because TikTok's numbers are only in its template files and the zone changes with caption length.

Why do safe zones matter for AI ads?

AI video tools generate a full frame and do not know where an app will place its buttons. A product, a face or a burned-in caption can land under the caption bar or the button rail. Check every cut before export:

  • Put captions and on-screen text inside the safe area, not at the very bottom.
  • Keep the product and the speaker's face clear of the right-hand button rail.
  • Check the first frame especially, since it carries the hook.
  • Re-check after any automatic changes to the ad, such as Advantage+ creative expansions.

Upload a frame to the safe zone checker to see each platform's overlay, or use the Instagram Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts pages.
