No first-party Facebook Reels spec page could be fetched (Ads Guide placement link is href='#'; tested slugs 404). Meta's Reels ads page, which covers Facebook and Instagram Reels together, says to build in 9:16 with audio and key elements in the safe zone, and links its 'Video ads guide' to the Instagram Reels page. Use the instagram/Instagram Reels entry as the nearest official reference.Source: www.facebook.com. Checked 12 Oct 2026.
Which aspect ratio should a Facebook video ad use?
Use 4:5 for Facebook Feed and 9:16 for Stories and Reels. Those are the ratios Meta's Ads Guide lists for each placement, and the full values are in the tables on this page.
For AI video ads, generate the master in 9:16. A vertical master covers Stories, Reels, Instagram and TikTok, and a 4:5 Feed version can be cut from it by trimming the top and bottom. Going the other way, from a wide clip to vertical, loses most of the frame.
Plan the 4:5 crop before you generate. Keep the face and the product in the middle band of the frame, so the Feed cut does not slice through a head or a label. The video aspect ratio converter does the crop with a focus point you can move.
How long can a Facebook video ad be?
Meta allows far more length than an ad needs. Feed accepts 1 second to 241 minutes and Stories 1 second to 3 minutes, per the Facebook Stories specs.
The limit is not the problem; holding attention is. An AI video ad is usually several generated shots cut together, not one long generation. Write the script to the length you can fill with consistent shots, not to the maximum.
What are the text limits for Facebook ads?
Text limits differ by placement. For Feed video, Meta lists primary text of 50 to 150 characters and a 27-character headline. For Stories, it lists 125 characters of primary text and a 40-character headline.
Write the headline to the shorter limit if one ad runs in both placements. That way it is not cut off in Feed. Put the claim that matters in the first line of primary text, since that is the part people see before tapping "more".
Keep on-screen text out of the AI prompt. Add captions and supers in the edit, where you can fix spelling, move them out of the interface and swap them for each version.
Where is the safe zone on Facebook Stories and Reels?
For Facebook Stories, Meta says to leave about 14 percent of the top and 20 percent of the bottom free of text and logos. It gives no side margin.
For Facebook Reels, Meta publishes no separate figures. Its Reels ads page covers Facebook and Instagram together and points to the Instagram Reels spec, which asks for 14 percent top, 35 percent bottom and 6 percent each side. Meta's safe zone help article adds one rule: if a Reels ad has a disclaimer, keep the bottom 40 percent clear.
Upload a frame to the safe zone checker to see both overlays on your own video.
What does Meta not state officially?
Meta has no fetchable spec page for Facebook Reels. The Ads Guide lists Facebook Reels as a placement, but the link goes nowhere and every page address we tried returned an error. The Facebook Reels spec table therefore shows "Not stated" for everything except 9:16.
Meta's own safe zone numbers do not agree with themselves. The Facebook Stories page gives 14 percent as 250 pixels and 20 percent as 340 pixels, but on a 1920-pixel frame those percentages are 269 and 384 pixels. We use the percentages.
The Feed specs on this page are the ones Meta shows for the Awareness objective. We did not check the pages for other objectives, so confirm in Ads Manager if you run a different one.
How did we handle conflicts between Meta's pages?
Where two Meta pages disagree, we use the current Ads Guide page and note the other one. The main case is Stories length: the Ads Guide gives up to 3 minutes, while Meta's older video requirements one-sheet gives 1 to 120 seconds and a source ratio of 1.91:1 to 9:16.
If your ad sits between 120 seconds and 3 minutes, check it in Ads Manager before launch. A Stories ad that long is rare anyway.
A checklist before you upload
| Check | Facebook Feed | Facebook Stories and Reels |
|---|---|---|
| Ratio | 4:5 | 9:16 |
| Canvas | 1440x1800 | 1440x2560 (Stories) |
| Headline | 27 characters | 40 characters (Stories) |
| Key elements | Middle of frame | Outside the top and bottom zones |
| Preview | Feed mockup | Stories or Reels mockup |
Before you send versions to a brand, render them in the ad mockup generator to see them with a caption and button in place. If you make AI ads that already perform and want briefs with winning scripts, see how Anglr works for creators.
