Creative strategist jobs and salary: where to look and what employers want

By James Tumbucon
Updated · 8 min read

Creative strategist jobs are posted by direct-to-consumer brands, performance agencies and app companies, mostly on general job boards, startup boards and company careers pages. Published US pay figures run from a Payscale average base of $61,573 (Sep 2026) to a Hollylist entertainment-postings median of $95,000 (Oct 2026). This guide explains each figure and what employers ask for.

What are creative strategist jobs?

Creative strategist jobs are roles where you decide which ads a brand makes next: you research customers, choose angles, write briefs and read the results. The role and what a strategist does each week are covered in What is a creative strategist?; this guide covers pay, where the jobs are and how to read a posting.

The same title covers different jobs depending on who is hiring:

Employer type What the job usually looks like What to check in the posting
Direct-to-consumer brand, in-house One brand, deep product knowledge, close work with the media buyer and editors Who makes the ads: in-house team, agency or creators
Performance or paid social agency Several client accounts at once, client calls, faster turnaround How many accounts per strategist, and whether you present to clients
App or game company Ads for installs, often many short variations, heavy testing Which platforms and which metrics you own
Entertainment or media company Campaigns for titles, shows or releases Whether it is performance work or brand and launch work
Freelance or contract Briefs and strategy for one or more brands, paid per project, retainer or hour Scope, hours, who owns the ad account, how you are paid

How much does a creative strategist make?

Published US figures range from a Payscale average base salary of $61,573 to a Hollylist median of $95,000, because the two sources measure different groups of jobs. Neither is a promise of pay for any one role.

Source Figure What it measures Date
Payscale Average base salary $61,573; median $62k; 10th percentile $40k, 90th percentile $102k Base salary reported by 75 people with the title creative strategist, US, all industries Updated 1 Sep 2026
Hollylist Median $95,000 per year; 10th percentile $65,000, 90th percentile $150,000 Salaries stated in creative strategist job postings on Hollylist (75 postings with salary data), entertainment industry only, US Updated Oct 2026

How to read the two:

  • Payscale is self-reported base salary. It comes from salary profiles that people fill in, not from job ads. The sample is small: 75 profiles.
  • Hollylist is posted salaries in one industry. It comes from job postings with a stated salary on an entertainment-industry job site. Posted ranges are what employers advertise, not what people are paid.
  • Both are national US figures. Neither headline figure is for a specific city, company size or seniority, so use them as a range to compare offers against, not as a target.

Adjacent context only: the US Bureau of Labor Statistics has no "creative strategist" occupation. The nearest roles it tracks are management jobs. It gives a median annual wage of $133,660 for advertising and promotions managers and $166,790 for marketing managers, both for May 2025 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, page last modified 27 Aug 2026). These are manager salaries, not creative strategist salaries.

Glassdoor and ZipRecruiter salary pages could not be fetched on 12 Oct 2026, so their figures are not used here.

Where are creative strategist jobs posted?

Most creative strategist jobs are posted on general job boards and LinkedIn, on startup and tech job boards, and on companies' own careers pages. On 12 Oct 2026, the US results for "creative strategist jobs" were almost all individual listings from boards of these kinds.

Where What you find there Tip
LinkedIn and Indeed The largest number of listings, all employer types Set an alert for each title variant below, not only "creative strategist"
Startup and tech job boards Roles at app companies and venture-backed brands Read the team size; small teams often want you to write scripts or edit too
Marketing-specific job boards Agency and brand marketing roles Good for agency roles in paid social
Remote-work job boards Remote roles, often contract Check country and time-zone limits
Company careers pages Roles that are sometimes not posted elsewhere List the brands and agencies whose ads you study and check their pages directly
Industry job sites Entertainment, media and gaming roles Hollylist is one example for entertainment
Communities and direct outreach Freelance and contract work Share a case study, not a CV

Search several titles, because companies name the same job differently. The work matters more than the title, so read each posting's duties before you decide.

Titles that often describe the same or a close role:

  • Creative strategist
  • Creative strategy (as in "creative strategy manager" or "creative strategy lead")
  • Performance creative strategist
  • Paid social creative strategist
  • Growth creative strategist
  • Ad creative strategist
  • UGC strategist or UGC creative strategist
  • Creative producer or creative lead (sometimes includes strategy; check duties)

Titles that sound close but are usually different jobs: brand strategist (brand positioning, not ad testing), content strategist (organic content and editorial plans), and creative director (leads the look and the creative team).

What do employers ask for in a creative strategist?

Most postings ask for paid social experience, research and briefing skills, comfort with ad data, and examples of past work. Hollylist lists creative strategy, cross-functional collaboration, project management, copywriting, performance marketing and data analysis among the skills in the creative strategist postings on its site (Hollylist, updated Oct 2026).

Group what you read in postings into these areas, and prepare evidence for each:

What postings ask for What counts as evidence
Paid social experience (Meta, TikTok, YouTube) Ads you made, briefed or ran, and which platform they ran on
Customer research A short summary of review or comment research and the angles it produced
Writing briefs and hooks Two or three real briefs, cleaned of anything confidential
Reading ad data One example where you read results and changed what was made next
Format knowledge (UGC, video, static) Ads in several formats from the same angle
Working with editors, creators and media buyers How you briefed, gave notes and handed off
Project management How many ads or briefs you handled per week or month

If your evidence is mostly finished ads, add the reasoning: one line on the angle and the hook for each. A portfolio of videos with no reasoning shows production skill, not strategy. UGC portfolio covers layout and hosting, and the same structure works for strategy case studies.

How do you read a creative strategist job posting?

Read a posting for what you will actually do each week, how many accounts or ads you will own, and how you will be judged. The title alone does not tell you.

Check these points before you apply:

  1. Accounts and volume. One brand or many clients? How many briefs or ads per week?
  2. Hands-on or brief-only. Will you write scripts, edit or make the ads, or only brief others?
  3. Who makes the ads. In-house editors, an agency, UGC creators, AI editors? This decides how detailed your briefs must be.
  4. Data access. Will you see the ad account results yourself, or get a report from the buyer?
  5. How you are judged. Win rate of new ads, cost per purchase, volume shipped, or something else.
  6. Pay range and type. Salary, contract rate or retainer. If the posting states a range, note it and compare it with the figures above.
  7. Location. Remote, hybrid or office, and any country or time-zone limits.

What is the test task, and how do you prepare?

A hiring process for creative strategy may include a practical task, such as reviewing a brand's current ads and proposing what to test next. Prepare by doing that exercise on your own before you apply.

A practice task you can repeat for any brand:

Brand: [brand] / Product: [product]
1. Current ads: list [5–10] live ads. For each: angle, hook, format.
2. Research: [20–50] reviews or comments. Top 3 reasons people buy.
   Top 3 objections.
3. Gaps: angles customers mention that the ads do not use.
4. Test plan: [3] new angles. One brief each (angle, hooks, format,
   proof, CTA).
5. Measures: what result would make you keep, change or stop each one.

Keep it to two or three pages. Hiring managers read many of these; a short, specific answer is easier to judge than a long deck.

How is freelance creative strategy work paid?

Freelance and contract creative strategists are usually paid by the hour, per project, per brief or on a monthly retainer. Some ad makers who also write their own angles are paid on how their ads perform.

Pay model How it works Suits
Hourly Paid for time spent on research, briefs and reviews Short or uncertain scope
Per project or per brief A set fee for an audit, a test plan or a batch of briefs Clear, one-off work
Monthly retainer A set monthly fee for an agreed scope Ongoing work on one account
Performance Paid based on how the ads perform People who make the ads as well as choose the angles, and who trust their results

No sourced market rate for freelance creative strategists was found on a first-party page for this guide, so none is given. Performance pay vs flat fee for AI editors compares the flat and performance models in detail.

Where do AI editors fit in creative strategist jobs?

AI video editors who choose their own angles and hooks already do part of the creative strategist's job. Some move into strategist roles; others stay hands-on and are paid as editors who need little direction.

If you are an AI editor looking at these jobs, your advantage is that you can show finished ads for every angle you propose, in several formats, quickly. Add a written angle and brief to each, and track how each version did. The AI video editing work hub and AI video editor jobs cover where hands-on AI editing work is posted.

Anglr is not a job board and does not list creative strategist openings. It pays AI creators, editors and agencies on performance to remake winning ad scripts in every format, with an optional smart retainer for hitting volume. Every brief includes winning angles and examples; editors use their own AI tools and do their own creative strategy and editing. It is for people whose ads already perform. See how it works for editors.

Who this is for

  • Independent AI creators and editors. You make the ads yourself. You know your work performs, so you'd rather be paid on what it does than on a flat fee.
  • AI agencies and studios. You run a team of editors. You write the brief, your team makes the versions, and you're paid on performance because you know your team's ads scale.

Not for you if

  • You only want a flat fee.
  • You're new to editing and not yet confident your ads will perform.
  • You want every shot spelled out for you.
  • You make one style and won't try others.
