Runway for ads: a practical guide

By James Tumbucon
Updated · 9 min read

Using Runway for ads means generating shots with Gen-4.5 or a third-party model, re-versioning finished footage with Aleph 2.0, and driving characters with Act-Two, then assembling the ad in an editor. This guide covers Runway's published specs, the ad formats each tool suits, Runway's ad-specific apps and API recipes, prompt templates, pricing and its commercial-use terms.

What Runway does for ad work

Runway is an AI video suite and API: its own models make and edit shots, it resells third-party models, and it has apps and API recipes built for product ads. For ad work the three tools that matter are Gen-4.5 for new shots, Aleph 2.0 for editing footage you already have, and Act-Two for character performance.

Runway describes itself as "building foundational Real-World Intelligence", with a creative suite, an API and a robotics toolkit (Runway). Besides its own models, its API lists Seedance 2.5, Veo 3.1, Gemini Omni Flash, Wan 3.0, MiniMax H3 and others (Runway API models), and its plans list Kling 3.0 (Runway pricing).

Spec Gen-4.5 Aleph 2.0 Act-Two Source
What it does Text to video and image to video "Edit one frame and Aleph 2.0 modifies the rest of your video to match" Transfers "movement, expressions, audio, and gestures" from a performance video to a character Gen-4.5, Aleph 2.0, Act-Two
Length 2 to 10 seconds Input video 30 seconds or shorter Up to 30 seconds, 3 second minimum same, API reference
Resolution 720p, 24 or 25 fps Not listed in the guide 720p sizes, 24 fps same
Aspect ratios App image to video: 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3, 3:4, 21:9. API text to video: 1280:720, 720:1280 Expand to 16:9, 4:3, 3:2, 1:1, 2:3, 3:4, 9:16, 21:9 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3, 3:4, 21:9 same
Plan Standard and higher Standard and above list "Access to all AI video & image models" Standard or higher same, pricing
Credits 12 per second 140 per 5 seconds 5 per second Pricing, API pricing

Two gaps to plan around. Gen-4.5 outputs 720p, so use the plan's 4K upscaling for final exports. The Gen-4.5 help article does not list audio as an output, so plan the voice and sound separately or use a model that generates audio.

Runway's ad-specific apps and recipes

Runway has tools built for product ads that general video models do not. The API "recipes" take product images and a brief and return a finished clip, and the app has image tools for statics and storyboards.

Tool What it takes What it returns Source
Product UGC recipe (API) Character image, product image, product details, optional creative direction or "an entire dialog script" Vertical UGC ad, 720:1280 or 1080:1920, 4 to 15 seconds, optional audio API reference
Product ad recipe (API) 1 to 10 product images, up to 4 style images, product info, creative direction "Cinematic product ad", 4 to 15 seconds, eight ratios including 1080:1920 same
Product swap recipe (API) A 1.8 to 15 second reference video, the original product image, 1 to 10 images of the new product The same video with the new product, "preserving camera motion, lighting, and scene composition" same
Multi-shot video recipe (API) A story prompt, or a shot list of 3 to 5 shots A multi-cut video of 5, 10 or 15 seconds same
Create Ad (app) A reference ad, a product or scene image, a tagline One 16:9 image, made with Nano Banana Pro Create Ad
Product Reshoot (app) A product image plus directions or a preset The product in a new scene, 16:9 by default, made with Nano Banana 2 Product Reshoot

Product swap is the most useful of these for scaling. If one product demo works, the same shot can carry another product from the same brand without regenerating the scene.

Which ad formats Runway suits

Runway suits formats where the picture carries the ad: product demos, brand film and stylised scenes, plus re-versions of footage that already exists. The table is guidance from published capabilities, not test results.

Format How Runway fits Format page
Product demo Product ad recipe, Gen-4.5 image to video from a product photo, product swap for other SKUs AI product demo ads
Brand film Gen-4.5 handles "detailed camera choreography" in one prompt; 21:9 in the app; ProRes export on Max (Gen-4.5) AI brand film ads
Product placement Aleph 2.0 replaces an object in existing footage with your product AI product placement ads
Talking head or UGC Product UGC recipe, or Character Script to Video with a typed script and a preset, cloned or generated voice AI talking head ads
Pixar-style or mascot Act-Two drives a stylised character from your own acted performance; it "works well with a range of angles, non-human characters, and styles" (Act-Two) AI mascot ads
Drama Act-Two up to 30 seconds per take for acted scenes; Gen-4.5 for cutaways AI drama ads

For a pure talking-head read with many languages, a dedicated avatar tool is often faster. See HeyGen for ads.

Workflow: from script to finished Runway ad

Build the stills first, generate shots from them, then use Aleph 2.0 to make the versions. A 30 second ad on Gen-4.5 is usually four to eight shots of 2 to 10 seconds.

  1. Break the script into shots. One line or action per shot, each under 10 seconds for Gen-4.5. Mark which shots are talking shots; those go to Act-Two, Character Script to Video or the product UGC recipe.
  2. Make the start frames. Generate or reshoot product and scene stills, then use them as image-to-video inputs. The Gen-4.5 guide says image-to-video prompts "should focus on describing the motion of the scene" (Gen-4.5).
  3. Generate in the final ratio. Pick 9:16 for Reels and TikTok at generation time. The Gen-4.5 guide notes that changing the ratio away from the input image's shape crops the input.
  4. Record the talking shots. For Act-Two, film yourself or an actor reading the line on a phone, then apply it to the character.
  5. Review every take. Check label text, hand and finger count, product shape between frames, and mouth shapes on talking shots.
  6. Edit and upscale. Assemble, add captions, voice, music and the end card, then upscale to 4K for delivery. Put prices, offers and claims in as editor text.
  7. Version with Aleph 2.0. Change the background, wardrobe, time of day or product in the finished shots to make test variants without regenerating the scene.

Prompt templates for Runway ads

Write Gen-4.5 prompts as a sequence of camera and action instructions, and Aleph 2.0 prompts as one action verb plus the change. Aleph's guide recommends "An action verb that describes what you want to do" and "A description of your desired transformation" (Aleph 2.0 guide).

The templates below are written for this guide. Square-bracket items are placeholders.

Limits, terms and policy notes

Runway's terms allow commercial use on every plan, but free videos carry a watermark and outputs may be used for model training. Check both before you upload brand assets.

Commercial use. The Terms of Use (4.4) say: "The Company does not claim ownership of any of your Inputs or Outputs" and "Subject to your compliance with the Agreement, the Company does not restrict your commercial use of your Outputs" (Runway terms). The help center lists "product advertising" as a covered use and says there is "no formal requirement for you to credit us" (Usage rights).

Training. Section 4.4 also says "Inputs and Outputs may be used by the Company to train and improve its AI models." Ask the brand before you upload unreleased packaging or confidential assets.

People in your inputs. Section 4.2 says you may not submit "a photograph of another person without that person's permission." Get written consent for any real face you use as a character input.

Watermark. "All videos generated on a Free plan feature a Runway watermark" (Free plan details). Paid plans list "No watermarks".

Pricing, as published (USD, yearly toggle).

Plan Price Credits Notable for ads
Free $0/month 125, one time Watermark; credits cannot be purchased
Standard $12/month billed annually ($15 shown struck through) 625/month ("= 52s of Gen-4.5") All video and image models, 4K upscaling
Pro $28/month billed annually ($35 struck through) 2,250/month 1 Brand Kit, 1 custom voice clone, unlimited 4K upscaling
Max $76/month billed annually ($95 struck through) 9,500/month, roll over 1 month ProRes, HDR and image sequences, up to 3 voice clones

Source: Runway pricing. On the API, "Credits can be purchased for $0.01 per credit", with Gen-4.5 at 12 credits per second and Aleph 2.0 at 28 credits per second (API pricing).

Platform labels. Meta labels ad images "created or edited using third-party AI tools with AI info" (Meta). TikTok requires the AIGC label or your own clear disclaimer on AI-generated ad content, and counts "Showing the primary subject doing something they didn't actually do" as significant modification (TikTok ads policy). Aleph edits to a real person's footage fall in that group, so label them. More detail: AI-generated content labels on Meta and TikTok ads.

Runway in a one-script, every-format workflow

Runway fits the one-script method as the picture and re-versioning tool. Keep the script and voice track fixed, build a product demo with Gen-4.5, a mascot version with Act-Two, and test variants with Aleph 2.0 edits, then use a talking-head tool for the presenter read. The method is in one winning script, made in every ad format.

Anglr pays AI creators, editors and agencies on performance to remake winning ad scripts in every format: UGC, podcast, drama, animation and brand film. Anglr provides the winning scripts and angles, and every video gets a QC and compliance review before it goes live. If you already make full ads in Runway and know they perform, see how it works for creators.

Who this is for

  • Independent AI creators and editors. You make the ads yourself. You know your work performs, so you'd rather be paid on what it does than on a flat fee.
  • AI agencies and studios. You run a team of editors. You write the brief, your team makes the versions, and you're paid on performance because you know your team's ads scale.

Not for you if

  • You only want a flat fee.
  • You're new to editing and not yet confident your ads will perform.
  • You want every shot spelled out for you.
  • You make one style and won't try others.

FAQ

Is Runway good for video ads?

Runway suits ads that need cinematic shots, product scenes and fast re-versioning of finished footage. Gen-4.5 makes 2 to 10 second shots, Aleph 2.0 edits existing video, and the API has product UGC, product ad and product swap recipes.

Can I use Runway videos in ads commercially?

Yes. Runway's terms say it does not claim ownership of your outputs and does not restrict your commercial use of them, and its help center lists product advertising as a covered use. Free-plan videos carry a Runway watermark, so ads need Standard or above.

How much does Runway cost?

As published on 12 Oct 2026 with the yearly toggle: Standard $12 a month billed annually with 625 credits a month, Pro $28 with 2,250 credits, Max $76 with 9,500 credits. Gen-4.5 costs 12 credits per second. See Runway pricing.

Does Runway make talking-head UGC ads?

It can. The API's product UGC recipe builds a vertical UGC ad from a character image, a product image and product details, and Act-Two and Character Script to Video make a character speak from a performance video, a typed script or an audio file.

What aspect ratios does Runway Gen-4.5 support?

In the app, image to video supports 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3, 3:4 and 21:9 at 720p. On the API, Gen-4.5 text to video is 1280:720 or 720:1280. There is no 4:5 option, so crop a feed version from a 1:1 or 3:4 render in the editor.

Does Runway use my ad content to train its models?

Runway's Terms of Use say inputs and outputs may be used to train and improve its AI models. Check with the brand before uploading unreleased products or brand assets.
